Among them, like one of them, I saw the master Antonio Di Ciolo.
“Jump in the hoop! Go!” he said with the enthusiasm of a grandpa.
Time to take paper and pen and I went up to one of the today’s best fencing
“Carpe Diem” Enrico Di Ciolo, his son, said to me. So I started
Are you happier for the 4th Sanzo’s Olympic participation
or for the work you are doing with these children?
This is my 7th Olympic participation, Sanzo is good, but I think he didn’t
win alone but with the entire team. The fact he conquered his 4th Olympic participation
gives me the same satisfaction of working with these children.
Why do you work with children?
Because I think tomorrow a lot of them will be like Sanzo, they
are the future, they are my hope. I want them to learn the movement directly
Do you hope to win during Beijing 2008?
For Beijing we will see. In my opinion it’s important to
take part in something but it’s better to win something.
How do we learn in your school?
We learn with the others. The movements we teach are very useful
for the children, they learn by imitation, anyway our brain is full of mirror-neurons.
They learn how to learn in every context: at school, at home etc.
Is it more important they have fun or they do a perfect exercise?
They have got to enjoy a lot, this is the presupposition. Then
there isn’t the perfect movement because, in the fencing, there aren’t
predictable movements. They have to learn a movement they should do again and
adapt to any situation.
There are many guys over there. Is everyone Italian?
No, some of them come from all over the world (Spain, Belgium,
France, Australia, Venezuela, Hungary) and this is very important and satisfying.
Has the teaching method changed from your first lesson with teacher
Yes, I changed it too. I paid my first fencing lessons with Puliti
working very hard and there I was also whipped by him. But I was the happiest
person all over the world! Computers are dangerous for our children they’ll
never be happy.
Which is the Olympics that gave you the best emotion?
Without any doubt Atlanta 1996; I won with Alessandro Puccini
and with Mariella Bertini. That year I was bi-Olympic, I don’t believe
someone did it.
Fencing as sport, discipline or life style?
I would say as philosophy of life. I go on with conviction in
my activity and I often get very good results for me and for the others. Fencing
is my life.
Is it true that a good teacher has always something to learn?
Yes, I was the first person who said that. I never consider myself
like the best, I’d make a mistake. We have to learn something from everyone.
We should always start from this point.
What do you want to say to fencers all over the world?
People live their life without restraint. To every fencer I want
to say he simply must win by beating oneself without synthetic helps, only with
his family and friends.
At the end of the interview I exited from the CSP.
There was a young man in the gym, I had just said “good-bye, thank you
for your time” to him.
